Private Arthur Smyth

 

This North Irish Horseman was probably the Arthur Smyth born on 17 August 1899 in Gilmore Street, Ballymena, County Antrim, the last of seven children of stonemason Thomas Smyth and his wife Matilda (née McAleese). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Gilmore Street with his siblings. According to a report in the Ballymena Observer of 2 September that year, he and two other boys were fined a shilling each for regularly breaking the windows of houses in the street.

Smyth enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 18 April and 2 May 1918 (regimental number unknown at present). He trained at the regimental reserve camp at Antrim until discharged in 1919, not having seen overseas service.

On 15 May 1920 he emigrated from Liverpool to Canada before settling in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. He died there in 15 September 1984 and was buried in the Mount Auburn Cemetery.
